I am once again throwing myself into the minefield that is online dating. Turns out I’m not so good with the real life stuff, who knew?! So online dating it is and my first port of call was Eharmony, they claim to match you on personality, on the important stuff that makes for a lasting relationship. To set up an account you have to answer a, fairly long, series of questions to determine your personality type and what you are looking for in a relationship. I will admit that I bought into that, I thought “that’s perfect, matches based on things that actually make you compatible,” but so far I am not impressed.
On the plus side the personality profile it created was accurate, I read it and I agree that it describes me very accurately. However…
I signed up during their “free communication fortnight” to discover that only certain parts of the communication were free. During the period that I was using a free account there were matches coming at me all the time, since I have paid these have slowed dramatically. Most of the matches are also entirely incompatible with me, many are outside the age range I specified, several are the exact opposite of what I said I wanted! Considering I spent a at least an hour, possibly two, filling out questions and “personality profiles” I am hugely disappointed by the matches I have been sent.
I had a chat with some friends who had tried it too and they said exactly the same things I felt, some moved to other dating sites, other’s gave up on online dating entirely. I definitely won’t be renewing my membership when the month is out. Match.com here I come!
